A look back …

At last year’s Summit, we asked the question, “how might we become a top region for entrepreneurship?”

Through a series of panel discussions, keynote lectures, presentations, and workshops, the Summit connected participants in a day-long dialogue about the most important elements that will contribute to our community’s success - namely the future of funding, our talent pipeline, and fostering a vibrant and inclusive community.

We invited Arlan Hamilton, Todd Olson, and an amazing line-up of thought leaders from around the Triangle, to explore answers to this question.

Here is the recap from the 2018 event.

A look forward …

This year, we will look at the future of our region by exploring how global trends like climate change, population growth, and AI will impact our region over the next 30 years.

We will discuss the future of sustainable development, entrepreneurship, and technology. These are areas in which strong, forward-thinking leadership and innovative thinking are paramount to our community’s success.

The Summit will serve as a catalyst for ideas for our innovation community and will connect to the work of our partners.

Attendees are invited to attend 1 of the following 3 sessions:

City of the Future (Session #1)

A moderated discussion exploring innovations in sustainable development with Curbed Editor Alissa Walker, Sidewalk Labs Director Siqi Zhu, and Raleigh City Council at-large member Nicole Stewart, moderated by Urban Designer Roberta Fox.

Technology that is shaping our region (Session #2)

Three talks exploring technology that is shaping our region.

What is the Future of Transportation?

Transportation has been remarkably stable and unchanging for decades, but we stand on the cusp of major breakthroughs including self-driving cars, flying cars, hyperloops, and robot taxis. Join Dr. Marshall Brain in a discussion about new transportation technologies and their implications.   He will also share updates on his work on the ecoPRT system.

Is IoT Raleigh's Silicon Valley?

Is Raleigh following a Silicon Valley path? In the 1970s and 80s, Silicon Valley combined its region's research, talent, and resources to capitalize on the booming semiconductor industry, leading to some of the earliest successful tech companies and the regional transformation that made Silicon Valley the hub it is today.

Does that transformational tale map to what Raleigh is doing today with IoT? Raleigh is leveraging our region's resources to capitalize on the fourth industrial revolution, and combining a similar blend of research, talent, and resources to capitalize on new markets related to the internet of things. Join Dr. Sarah Glova of Riot Labs  in a discussion about how 1970s and 80s Silicon Valley parallels with today's Triangle ecosystem. We'll discuss how our region is an early adopter and a clear future winner for IoT in the next five decades, and more importantly, lessons learned from Silicon Valley's growth that could protect Raleigh from negative effects like skyrocketing living costs and inequitable diversity in leadership.

Enterprise 2025: Are You Ready to Work with Robots?

In just five short years, you will work with robots. Not the kind portrayed by Hollywood, but AI assistants that know you, help you, and work side-by-side with you. These assistants will make you superhuman by reading more than you possibly can, finding answers in data, and navigating the “app sprawl” that threatens productivity.

Igor Jablokov, CEO of Pryon, will show how augmented intelligence will make this possible. He’ll bring the future of work to life where employees are connected to the full powers of automation, machine learning, and natural language computing. Finally, Igor will describe how AI assistants will become indispensable by performing support tasks for knowledge workers, serving customers, and manning help desks to give companies the commanding advantages of AI-driven business.

Future of Entrepreneurship (Session #3)

Local thought leaders who are tackling the evolving challenges in entrepreneurship and innovation will share how their work is contributing to a more equitable and sustainable future for the region.

Speaker lineup to be announced.
